Launching on call schedule notifications in Slack, powered by Jira Service Management ChatOps

TL;DR We have introduced the capability of getting on call schedule notifications in Slack via Jira Service Management ChatOps

Ever wondered "Who’s on call right now?" and then spent 5 minutes digging through schedules or pinging your entire team? We feel you.
With Jira Service Management ChatOps for Slack, we’re making sure your team always knows who’s on deck — without the chaos. Get ready for real-time on-call change notifications directly in your Slack channel. And the best part? You can now summon help like a wizard Magic, using a simple alias.

With the Jira Service Management ChatOps bot, you can:

  • Receive instant channel notifications when your team’s on-call rotation changes.
  • Use alias-based mentions to quickly reach the current on-call responder — no more guessing who’s on duty.

Configure once, then simply use !alias-name ➡️ the bot replies with @ on-call human. Fast, simple, effective.

So what is an alias?

An alias is your quick way to reach the right person. Just set a keyword (e.g., !team), and the Jira Service Management ChatOps bot will automatically @ mention whoever is on call for that schedule. No more guessing. Learn more about alias.

Who can set up these on-call notifications in Slack?

  1. Anyone in the Slack channel can set them up — no special admin permissions required.
  2. Just ensure that your Slack and Jira Service Management user accounts are properly mapped.

The only prerequisite: your Jira Service Management site must be connected to your Slack workspace via the Chat and Video Tools page. This connection needs to be established by a Product Admin.

Step 2

Type /jsmops connect schedule or /jsmops oncall, you will get a CTA to Connect Schedule. Click on that CTA.

Some users might see this screen in Slack requesting permissions, if you don’t see the same and instead see the configure model, jump to Step 4

Step 3

Provide the permissions shown on the Slack OAuth screen to allow us to invite Jira Service Management ChatOps bot to both public and private channels that the user is a member of. These permissions ensure the bot can function correctly in those channels once it's added.

PS: This is a one time permission to be given by user, that’s all.

Step 4

Once the permission is given, you can again click on Connect Schedule CTA and you will see the “Connect a schedule” modal. Select the site, schedule and other configurations to set up notifications and create alias for invoking on-call team members

You can use this feature in public as well as private channels. All you need to ensure that you provide the permission to Jira Service Management ChatOps bot to both public and private channels that the user is a member of. These permissions ensure the bot can function correctly in those channels once it's added. This is a just one time permission to be given by user, that’s all.
