Have the same issue. I don't understand why the ticket doesn't have a green checkbox? I have 27 tickets in the last column all with different default types. None of them have this checkbox. They are not disappearing, they just stay there for months already.
It's not possible to disable it (although the request has already been raised)
To put a mostly-acceptable block on it though, simply make sure all your workflows are used by more than one project (even if it's an inactive or hidden project). As soon as a workflow is shared, project admins can't change it.
