Is there a way to perform capacity planning in team-managed projects?

Is it possible to perform capacity planning when planning sprints? I'm used to azure devOps and really love the ability to set IC capacity and compare to pointed stories/tasks. How do I accomplish this in Jira team-managed projects??

Hi @Sarah McNulty

Welcome to a community!

If you considering using plugins I would suggest the ActivityTimeline - the resource planning system. ActivityTimeline includes a Team Timeline, that provides users with an extra level of flexibility when it comes to planning the team’s work, as it allows them to schedule work not only for individuals but for the team as a whole.

In one Planning board, you can operate with your projects, teams, individuals, and milestones. The Workload panel will calculate the workload and availability of the team/users. Timesheets will show the most important data in your team.

You can try a trial or we can provide a demo session for you and your team if needed.

Hi, @Sarah McNulty. Welcome to the community.

The short answer is, yes. In fact there are numerous ways to do it. But, probably not with out-of-the-box Jira. At least, not easily.

However, *IF* you have Jira Cloud Premium (or Enterprise), you should have a look at Advanced Roadmaps - a feature only found in those editions.

If you are on the standard Jira Cloud plan you can have a look at the Atlassian Marketplace -- there are a number of Gantt and other capacity planning apps.

You could, for example, use a search like this one:

https://marketplace.atlassian.com/addons/app/jira/top-selling?hosting=cloud&query=capacity%20planning

I emboldened the search criteria I used.

Full disclosure: I work for the company that makes two of the app that show up on the resulting search results: Tempo Planner and Structure.Gantt -- but there are many others you may want to consider.

Hope this helps,

-dave
