safely delete users from JIRA 4.3

Kailash Vasani December 12, 2012

We are in process of upgrading to JIRA 4.3. During UAT, we found out that there are more active user available in current system, which is more than allowed by new license.

We need to figure out safest way to delete users. Has any one faced such situation?

hello,

we already had many users who were present in system just because they cant be deleted as they had either issues assigned to them or they reported issues. They were removed from all the groups including jira-user group.

we decided to use SQL to list out all the users and their reported issues and assigned issues re-reported and re-assigned resp. to other valid users.

time consuming but required process. :)

have you tried to deactivate the users you want to be removed anyway?

a login is no longer possible for them and i expect they should be excluded from those accounts that count against your license

Hi Kailash,

In JIRA only the users on the "jira-users" group counts against your license. It's not recommended deleting users since it may create inconsistent issues, so you can just remove all membership from this groups.

Thanks Lucas for your comments.

We already have many users who are there in system just because they either reported issues or were assigned issues. They all dont belong to any group.

One of route is to start with removing them from all the groups, followed by re-assign all their issues to valid users, and change reportee for all the issues they reported to respective project's project lead.

going to be fun working on this :)
