We are new to mail handlers in JIRA, but looking for a way to automate requests that come in from our sales team. Currently, we have a person who recieves an email request and manaully creates JIRA issues copying and pasting the contents of the email into the appropriate form fields. Ideally, we'd like to configure JIRA so that sales members could email the request, with the required input data, and have the JIRA mail handler create the issue and interpret the custom fields based on the layout of the email.
Are we asking too much of JIRA or is this possible?
The mail handlers built into JIRA can't do this. They cover summary, description, some of the user stuff, and priority in some cases. And they can comment. They don't look at custom fields.
To handle custom fields, you'll either want to write your own handler add-on, or find one that can do it for you. I usually reach for JEMH to do this, although there are some other add-ons that do mail processing.
