is it possible to change notification subject to type of action (i.e. Fixed, Closed, Updated) etc..
this would be really helpful to know instead of having to parse the body text to figure out what the notification is about.

Customising Email Content is not supported in OnDemand as described in Restricted Functions in Atlassian OnDemand. You'll find a link for a feature request there as well.

that's a bummer. it's kind of a bitch to go through 40 jira emails to see which actually require attention.. with a status in subject it would be so much easier to parse through

You can customize email subject using our plugin: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/net.vacom.jirassimo
The subject can be templated, so that you make use of values from JIRA issue itself.
