bulk edit: change task to subtasks

Won Lee February 8, 2023

I have several tasks. They all have blocked by links to various user stories.

I want to convert these tasks to subtasks with their parents being the linked issue in the task.

How do I do this?

Steps I've taken so far

  1. Created a filter to get all my issues that are task in a specific project.  Its almost 200 issues.
  2. clicked on the 3 dots for bulk change
  3. clicked on all issues then next
  4. selected move issues.  I cant use edit issues because i cant edit the issue type to subtask.
  5. kept the to project the same as source.
  6. changed task to subtask.

I need to fill in something for Select Parent Issue.

Hello @Won Lee

Subtasks can have only one parent issue. Each issue you convert to a subtask must have one issue designated as its parent. It cannot have multiple parents. And the parent and subtask issues must be in the same project.

During the Bulk Change operation you can only enter an explicit issue key there (i.e. ABC-123), and it can be only one issue key. That issue will become the parent for all issues in the bulk change.

You will have to convert the issues in smaller batches, converting each batch to become subtasks under one parent issue.

One might think there would be a clever way to do this with an Automation Rule. However, Automation Rules don't have an action for Move Issue or Convert to Subtask. It is also risky to try to use the Edit Action in a rule to change the issue type as that could put it into an inconsistent state with regard to the Status and workflow options.
