Workflow condition: field not null

I want to restrict a transition until certain select lists have had a value selected. Can I use the greater than (>) test with a blank value field tested as a string?

Maybe this will help to someone someday - To achieve field not null condition:

Use "Value Field" Condition

operator !=

leave value empty and compare as string.

The JIRA Suite Utilities[1] contain a field required validator[2]. Maybe this works with select lists, too...
