Will deleting a column with a related status remove the status as well?

I created a new status Ruled Out from Edit Workflow. I now have a related column named the same on my board which I do not want. If I assign the status to a different column and try to delete the column I get a message stating:

"Deleting a column doesn’t remove any issues from your FMS SPA Project project. You’ll need to reassign any statuses in this column to another on your board."

Will this delete the Ruled Out status as well? Or will I still be able to select the status from the dropdown? Also, I can't update the changes because it seems that columns are required to have statuses.

Thanks all!

Hi @Charisse Robison

Deleting a column doesn’t delete the status. Statuses are separate from columns. In fact, a column can have one or more statuses mapped to it.

However, for a column to appear in the board it must be associated with at least one status.

Thank you @Sarp Egemen

I am using a team-managed project. Is there a way to create a status without a corresponding column on the board?

Hi @Charisse Robison ,

Yes, it is possible to have statuses that aren't mapped to a board column. On team-managed projects you can do this by editing the workflow of the project. To do that:

1. Go to the board view.
2. In the top right corner of the board, click the three-dot icon.
3. Choose Manage Workflow and add your status.

Note: Remember that when an issue is transitioned to a status that is not mapped to a column, it won't be visible on the board. If you need to access it, you can do so by going to the "Issues" section located in the left sidebar.

Thank you, however, that's how I created the status in the first place. It automatically creates a column for the status to go in on the workflow. If I try to delete from the workflow or the board configuration it will delete the status. I want to keep the status but not have the column. Or, if there is another process to categorize issues as ruled out without showing them on the board, I'd be interested in that as well.

Can you, navigate to the "Columns and Statuses" section, drag the status that you want to separate from its column to the "Unassigned Statuses" column, which is located to the left of all the other columns?

Yes, I can do that. However, the column remains and I cannot save the changes because the column has a requirement that it must have a status assigned to it.

@Charisse Robison

Yes, in team-managed projects, if a column has no statuses assigned, you cannot save the configuration. However, you can delete the column to resolve this issue.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you still have trouble with it.
