Wiki renderer odd problem

I have some odd behaviour in our live JIRA - accented characters eg á look fine when editing a Wiki-rendered field and look fine when previewed too but when saved the view screen displays the characters wrongly eg á. Returning to the edit screen after saving the text, the characters still look fine and preview correctly.

The same text entered in a field using the default text renderer is displayed correctly.

We only get this behaviour in our live JIRA - our test instance which is a copy of the live database and should have the same configuration as the live JIRA (except SSL) renders the characters correctly on the view screen.

We're on JIRA 4.0.2. Anyone seen this before? Any ideas what's causing it?

We managed to fix this when we upgraded to JIRA 4.4.5 by using the -Dfile.encoding=utf-8 startup option.
