Why should we ever delete a Project?

Hello!

My company is composing a formal process for retiring Jira Cloud Projects and we found that we can either retain Projects indefinitely (Archive) or delete them immediately or after 60 days of retention (Trash).

Either option seems to hide issues from search results and keep them out of the user's way, but I wanted to ask if there are any significant Pros to deleting Projects (we are leaning towards retaining all Projects).

I can come up with a few, but I don't think that these are enough to convince us to delete Projects:

• Backups will be smaller (less data).
• Sandbox refreshes will be quicker (less data)

Are there any other good reasons to delete Projects instead of just retaining them? Maybe a data limit?

I'm not sure if there is a right answer here or not, but let me give you my thoughts on it.

possible reasons for deleting a project:

1. The project was created as a test and has outlived its usefulness
2. The project was created by mistake and has no real issues that need to be considered historically
3. similar to number two, the project is a duplicate
4. your instance has become extremely bloated, and there might be some performance implications. This reason, however, is subjective and really should not be considered without careful assessment.

in any case, where you might not be 100% sure either don't do it or export all of the issues into a CSV file and save it in a safe place. Also, consider creating a confluence page with details and screen captures of all of your project configuration information. This will help if you ever decide you want to restore that project.

Thanks for the reply! I agree with all of your points, and I think we're particularly interested in your #4:

That's probably our main concern with retention (performance loss), but I think we will proceed to archive any Projects of plausible value until performance becomes a noticeable issue that we would report to Atlassian - they manage our environment resources, so I'm sure that their infrastructure Team deals with these situations often.
