Why is my default resolution "Unresolved", even after defining "Done" as the default?

Brendan Pickford April 9, 2024

I have this in my "Resolutions" settings:

2024-04-10_10h44_00.png

But I get this result when resolving or closing a task:

2024-04-10_10h35_23.png

Why? How do I get the resolution to automatically default to "Done"?

This is on Jira cloud. It works as expected for our on-premises install, but we're slowly transitioning to the cloud service.

Cheers.

HI @Brendan Pickford

The "default" resolution (from the "Resolutions" settings page) just defaults which one comes up first in a list of resolutions, when choosing it from the transition screen. It has no impact on Workflows (otherwise all issues would end up with the same resolution).

---

You can do one of two things here...

  1. Add a post-function to set issues to "Done" when transitioning to the relevant closed status
  2. Add a transition screen, which includes the resolution field, and allow users to pick a resolution

---

I would also consider...

  • Adding post-functions to clear the resolution, if it's possible to reopen a "done" issue
  • If doing (2), limiting the available resolutions using workflow properties, if you don't want all options to be available

---

Let us know if you need more specific instructions to implement one of these :)

Hi @Brendan Pickford - This would be defined in your workflow.  On your transition to RESOLVED, you either need to add a post function to set the resolution to done or add a transition screen to prompt the user to select which resolution they want.

Thanks, @Mark Segall.

I got that impression from other posts, but don't understand what defining a default is meant to achieve if I still need to edit the workflow to get the expected result.

I had a look at the workflow in our on-prem instance, and couldn't spot a post function to automatically set the resolution. However, there is a transition screen, so maybe that makes the difference?

Yes - It would seem that your on-prem instance prompts the user to enter the resolution upon transitioning to Resolved, but your cloud instance does not.  So, adding the transition screen to your workflow on cloud should do the trick.
