Which is the best application for executive reporting?

Marian April 14, 2021

Hi there! this is the first time we´ve been asked to install an addon that could help to report to the Executive. The teams using JIRA are mixed and includes a Marketing & Communications team. Which is the best one? Would like something user friendly. Thanks in advance

Hi @Marian,

This may sound disappointing, but there is no standard answer to that question. Except something like this:

the best reporting tool for your executive team is the one that gives them the information the need to make decisions based on the data they need, as close to real time as possible and at the right cost of maintenance / implementation / licensing.

Your decision process is heavily depending on what data you have in Jira and what you have in other systems. It also relates to how your teams work and how they track status, milestones, budgets, ... And it is also impacted by how your executives like to access data: are they skilled computer users or rather rely on printed versions of charts explained to them in detail by product / project managers? It is even worth considering what reporting tools your organisation is already using ...

One thing that is mostly the case, is that your executives will most likely be interested in reporting across multiple projects. That is typically an area where Jira out of the box lacks a bit of functionality. On top of that, some of the most frequent questions they want answers to, are things like:

  • are we still on track for project x?
  • where are our biggest risks?
  • if we need to shift priorities, what would deliver the most value?

If your organisation is already using BI tools for other areas of the business (such as Tableau, PowerBI, ...) it might be a good idea to look into connector apps that help you link your Jira data to those tools. If you don't, EazyBI is a really good solution to bring BI reporting directly into Jira.

However, be aware that all those solutions may not be a walk in the park, as there are many dependencies on the way you organise your Jira data and the way people keep those up to date. No tool will ever deliver the reporting you need unless your process and the people running them are on the same page too.

So do spend some time in clearly defining what your executive reporting needs actually are, if you have the required data available in Jira or other systems and then embark on the tooling path. This might be an area where it is interesting to contact a solutions partner to help you on the right path as well. There is a lot of value in a good reporting and decision making framework, but also a lot of things to consider.

Maybe not a binary answer to your question, but I still hope it helps!

Hi @Marian welcome to the Atlassian Community forum.

If you are considering the market place tools, their are many to check out (number of ratings, downloads etc.). Having said, Jira align for C-Suite & Executives is one of the best you may check out.

Apart from that, I see Executive kpi reporting has good ratings you might check.

The place to start for more tools: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/
