@khushboo_puri ,

It depends: How serious/business critical is your environment? How often can you do upgrades? Seeing that you're currently at 9.4, I assume that there are some constraints (downtime/business impact/etc).

In that case I would recommend always using a so called 'Long Term Support (LTS)' version. FOr Jira, that would be 9.12.x: https://confluence.atlassian.com/support/atlassian-support-end-of-life-policy-201851003.html

LTS versions get the longest support for bugs and security fixes, in contrast with non-LTS versions. If there are security issues in a non-LTS version which is not the latest version, you'll always be forced to upgrade to a later LTS version (or the latest available version) to fix those. And how more recent the version, the higher the chances that there are some bugs in there that you might not want to have. :)

We will be upgrading in start of November. We are doing analysis now.

So LTS version will change by that time?

They announced that 10.2 will be the next LTS version, but it will likely take at least a couple months before it's released. Likely it's good to go for 9.12 right now, and plan for an additional upgrade early 2025.

Keep in mind that 10.2 will include a lot of breaking changes (new java version, etc), so will require more preparation to upgrade.

It looks like the LTS might have been post-poned for 10. 10.2 was released today and it doesn't have the "Long Term Support" badge:

Hi @khushboo_puri

It is recommended that Jira and Confluence be upgraded to the latest long-term supported version to ensure that minor version upgrades make it easy to patch any critical security vulnerabilities.

You may refer to the following document for more information:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/long-term-support-releases-948227420.html

  • The latest long-term supported version for Jira is v9.12.12 (As of 2nd August 2024)

In addition, please consider whether there is a fix for any bugs affecting your users in Jira that is only available on a newer version.

Thank you.

You should go thru and follow the steps in the Upgrade check list.

But, yes you should aim for the latest.  Definitely upgrade in a test environment first.
