Understanding which report to use

Hello,

We are creating a JIRA template to show EPICs - Releases - Stories.

In our Scrum of Scrums we are asked to report on time tracked.

What is the best report to use to show this information?  Currently, our template only shows releases so we are using the Time Tracking report but with our change what should we be tracking against.

If we use EPICs in order not to obscure the time, we will not put any time against the specific epic only show the start and end date.

Looking forward to some responses.

Hi @MA,

  1. Can please a bit elaborate on "If we use EPICs in order not to obscure the time, we will not put any time against the specific epic only show the start and end date."?
  2. What do you mean by 'JIRA template'?
  3. Have you tried using native JIRA gadget - 'Filter Results'? Just in case you aren't aware, you can add columns for estimates, time spent, etc., for a JQL filter you specify there.
  4. If you need something more sophisticated and you are open to 3rd party apps, I suggest trying the app I have developed - Multi-team Scrum Metrics & Retrospective. With it, you can see time spent on all issues in a sprint (Final Scope) or for some issues from your custom JQL filter. It also supports various Scrum Metric, such as Uncompleted Scope/Completed Scope/Unestimated Scope/... You can analyze the dynamics between sprints/months/quarters/half-years/years (for example 2023 vs 2024 - if the Uncompleted Scope increases or decreases) and many other stuff.

Hello @Alexey Pavlenko _App Developer_

Thank you for responding at the current time we are being asked to use what we can get with JIRA.

In response to your questions

  1. Can please a bit elaborate on "If we use EPICs in order not to obscure the time, we will not put any time against the specific epic only show the start and end date."? - As we want to use the Time tracking report, if I enter a start and end date for the epic will it modify the duration of the entire EPIC and the stories.  We will have EPIC and Stories but only the stories will be used to track our estimated and actual time.
  2. What do you mean by 'JIRA template'?  We are greating a project template so that when we start a new project we do not have to manually create the EPICs, Stories etc as all our projects have the same requirements.

@MA ,

Thank you for the answer.

If I understand correctly, you would like now to report based on epics. Since now an epic is a higher entity in your hierarchy than a release. Maybe I am missing something but with the Time Tracking report you can construct reporting based on fixversion (or the absence of it) only.

Best regards,
Alexey

Hi @MA

You might consider using time-tracking apps that in most cases have a customizable report of tracked time on issues.

I can recommend our Clockwork Automated Time Tracking & Timesheets Pro, or Free app which offers you the possibility to review timesheets and create reports that can be configured in various ways using break-down and filtering options.

Using timesheets, you can create a report and filter/breakdown it based on several options including, projects, issue types, issues labels, or other components. You can choose a range for a whole year and break down the data by chosen fields. This information can be also exported to Excel files.

Please find below the sample of how the timesheet looks like:

We also recently released some dashboard gadgets where you can add your reports and create charts.

If you have any questions, you can contact us at our help center.

Cheers!

Hi @MA,

My advice is to use Jira dashboards instead of reports for this purpose. They have the advantage of being highly customizable and displaying all project metrics in one central place, easily accessible by anyone interested. Using native Jira gadgets in combination with gadgets introduced by apps/plugins available on the Atlassian Marketplace, you can create effective dashboards that you can also use in Scrum of Scrums to see progress in real time.

If you consider the option of using a plugin, our Great Gadgets app offers some really useful gadgets for tracking epics, releases. It has all kind of gadgets that lets you calculate total time spent vs time remaining, can display epic, release or cross-teams burndown charts, velocity charts, progress at the epic or initiative level, etc

Have a look over these articles to make an idea about which gadgets to use:

Hello @Danut M _StonikByte_ ,

Thank you for getting back to me, if I were to create a dashboard which gadget would show that information.  I am currently using the Workload report but again taking this back to Time Tracking the numbers do not always line up.

Regarding plug-ins, are they always free and how do I know if my license is applicable for these plug-ins?

Appreciate your assistance.
