Unable to change status name back to the name of a deleted status

Philip Kapadia December 9, 2024

Hi!

I created a status called 'Invoices' and then accidentally deleted it.

Then, I wanted to create a new status called 'Invoices', but now I'm facing an error: "Invoices" already exists as a done status. Choose a different name.

This makes no sense, as far as JIRA should be concerned; I deleted the original status... how does it know it still exists? How can I rename this new status back to 'invoices'?

Confusingly, the error message displayed when trying to rename the status from the project asks me to create a status with the same name within the workflow editor. Still, the issue persists when I follow its link to the workflow editor and try to either rename or create a new status with the original name!

How can I rename this status back to 'Invoices'?

Thanks in advance,

Philip Kapadia

Hello @Philip Kapadia

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

In what type of project are you working? That information shows at the bottom of the panel on the left. In your image, it is hidden behind the pop-up.

If you are working in a Company Managed project, then adding a new status named "Invoices" to the workflow added that status to the Global list of available statuses. Deleting the status from that workflow would not delete it from the Global list. If you want to use it again in your workflow (in a Company Managed project) then with the new workflow editor (which it appears you are using)

1. In the image you shared it indicates that "Invoices" exists as a "done" status

2. In the workflow editor You need to select Add Status for the Status Category where you previously added "Invoices". So you need to click on the +Done status option.

3. When you do that, and then start to type in Invoices, you should get a list showing that it already exists, like I show below when I try to re-add Cancelled.

4. Click on it in that list, then click the Add button to add that Status into the workflow.

there should have been a dialouge notifying me of the fact that the deleted Invoices status was under the (Done) category.

It was perhaps not adequately highlighted, but this dialog does tell you that the status already exists under the "done" category.

That wasn't terribly clear to me.

Didn't realise it status was also segregated as colour and therefore renaming a To Do status to the same name would not have been the same as renaming a Done status.

Thanks for your help though!

Hello,

I was in a team managed project.

Creating a new status called Invoices in the prior (Done) status worked for me. I then simply moved the status from Done to In-Progress.

Many thanks for your help, but this really wasn't intuative, and there should have been a dialouge notifying me of the fact that the deleted Invoices status was under the (Done) category.
