When searching for issues, you can filter by issue type. We have several different types in our project, so only a selection is shown from the drop down without clicking on 'Show full list':
How does Jira pick which issue types to display here?
The issue is that tasks are our most common issue type (along with bugs) and I always have to type 'task' to select it from the list. We barely ever use 'Analytics Request' or 'Change Request' so it's not picking from our most-used types.
For reference, this is how our issue types are set up:
From my experience, it seems that Jira prioritizes issue types based on their hierarchy first, followed by an alphabetical sorting of the remaining types.
In the snapshot you’ve shared, Feature appears at the top, followed by Epic—this makes sense since, in many organizations, Epic and Feature usually sit at the top of the hierarchy unless explicitly redefined in advanced roadmap plans. After these, Jira seems to sort the remaining issue types alphabetically.
I’ve observed a similar pattern in my environment as well, where an issue type starting with a number is listed immediately after Epic and Feature.
Kind Regards
Utkarsh
@Utkarsh Agarwal thanks for your reply, you're onto something. I do find it odd that it would list Epic first then Feature, when in my project hierarchy I have another type first, then feature, then epic. I guess only epics and features are hard coded to be at the top.
