Tweaking Sprint Gadgets for Kanban Board

shantanu behera December 10, 2024

There are some Dashboard gadgets which require us to share the sprint details like

  • Days Remaining in the Sprint

  • Sprint Health Gadget
  • Sprint Burndown Gadget

While I am trying to display weekly details of the issues by using startofWeek() and endofweek() parameters in my filter, how can we show weekly details in these dashboard gadgets.

Hi @shantanu behera,

The gadgets that you mentioned require a Scrum board (and a sprint) as input data. You cannot use them for Kanban, because the Kanban boards do not have sprints.

If you want something similar for Kanban, you could search on Atlassian Marketplace for an app (plugin) that provides such gadgets.

If you consider the idea of using a plugin, our Great Gadgets app can be an good option. By using its Release Burndown Burnup Chart gadget you can display a burndown chart  for your Kanban team by specifying your filter/JQL as data input. Also, the same app offers many other gadgets that you can use with Kanban: velocity/throughput, cycle time, lead time, etc.

Hello @shantanu behera

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

The only way to use those gadgets is by implementing a scrum board and sprints.

All of those gadgets are based on the idea of a time box where you start the time box with a commitment to complete a specified set of work.

That is the antithesis of a Kanban board where work flows in and gets completed and more work is pulled in constantly. There is no set of work at the beginning of the week which you commit to completing by the end of the week.

Oh yeah. I was thinking the same Trudy. Thanks Danut for sharing the plugins. I'll go through them.

Hi @shantanu behera -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Yes, and...to the suggestions from @Trudy Claspill

Although there are several variants of Kanban which use iterations and planning cycles (e.g., Kanban Method), there are often other measures which help to observe flow, delivery progress, and guide the team in improvement experiments: WIP count, Lead Time, Build Cycle Time, Age of WIP, WIP Debt, etc.

Please consider reviewing those other measures with your team to determine which will better help with the Kanban practices the team uses rather than trying to use Atlassian's interpretation of "valid" Scrum measures for a team using Kanban.

Kind regards,
Bill
