Story that was changed to an epic doesn't show up in Epic Panel on Backog

Rod November 20, 2019

We changed the issue type of an issue from Story to Epic (or, it might have been from Bug to Epic.) . Subsequent to that, we have associated new stories with that epic.  However, while the stories in the epic show up in the backlog, the epic does not appear in the epic panel on the left.

I did notice something different about that epic than other epics in the backlog. If you go to the "old" JIRA view of that epic  and click on the "..." icon on the top right and select "Agile Board", you get the error message "The issue could not be located on any part of board '*Product Board'. When you do the same thing with other epics in the backlog, it takes you back to the project backlog.

Does anyone have any idea about why the epic doesn't show in the backlog's epic panel?

I had the same issue and it looks like Epics have 2 places to store statuses.

1. Issue status (Epic is also an issue):

2. Epic status - which is not visible on the issue screen by default - unless it is set to anything but None and you have it configured as visible on your screen - like Petter described.

If not, what you have to do, is to go to edit screen and enable Epic Status Field and change it to anything but DONE. Then, the Epic will be back on your board:

Hello @Rod

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Checking other similar cases, the error you are facing usually happens when you originally create the story through CSV or any other import methods. What happens is that, for some reason, the Epic status field receives a wrong or 'Done' value that causes the issue to don't be recognized by the board and consequently to don't be displayed in the Epic panel.

Please, try the following steps to get it fixed:

  • Navigate to your issue > add your Epic status with any existing value (Open or In progress) or to 'None'. P.S: If you are not able to find this field, navigate to your project > Project Settings > Screens > Add the 'Epic Status' field to the edit screen of your Epics
  • Double-check if your board filter is not excluding that Epic

Let us know if this information helps.

I am facing the same issue where a story that was converted into an epic does not show up on the epic pane in the backlog view.
