Sprint issues shown in backlog

Robin Augustinus July 1, 2019

Hi all,

My problem is simple though very confusing.

I am trying to move a user story from the backlog of my project to a future sprint, to pre-plan that sprint. I move the story to the sprint (either by dragging or by right-clicking the story) and move it to the sprint. If I then refresh the page, the story is not in the sprint anymore but is shown in the backlog.

If I go to the issue screen, in the "Future sprint" attribute, it does show a link to the future sprint, so this is correct. However, in the "Backlog" screen the story is shown in the backlog.

I think it has something to do with the filtering and with future sprints, but I have no idea why.

Thanks

I have contacted support and the situation has been resolved.

For anyone else having this problem, this is apparently a bug that was present in Jira 7.2. See the bug report here:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWSERVER-13530

Solution involves (obviously) upgrading the newest version, although the bug report also shows a (temporary) workaround.

Thanks all.

Hi @Robin Augustinus

Would you please post your board filter?  That may help people understand if the issue is related to the filter.  Thanks!

Best regards,

Bill

Hi @Bill Sheboy

As far as I know, I am not using any filter. I am using the out-of-the-box "Backlog" screen. I do think something might be going wrong with the behind the scenes filter used by Jira to decide which stories belong in Sprint 3, Sprint 4, backlog, etc. but I have not used any additional filters.

Hi Robin

FYI that your board filter can impact what is shown in the backlog.  Please see this documentation for more information:

Thanks @Bill Sheboy

I have looked through the documentation and have not really found anything that I think could explain the problem I am having. The only sentence in the documentation I do not fully understand is the following:

"the issue matches the board's saved filter"

What and where can I find my board's saved filter??

I have added some pictures to try and explain.

Steps I have done:

- I moved an issue from the backlog to a Sprint (using drag and drop)

- The issue shows in the sprint

- I refresh the page

- The issue does not show in the backlog anymore (see picture below)

jira-1.PNG

- If I view the issue screen itself, the issue does show it is linked to Phase 5 Sprint 5 (see picture below). Even though in the backlog screen it shows in the backlog.

jira-2.PNG

I have been able to reproduce this error both when dealing with active sprints and when dealing with future sprints.

This "bug" occurs only with issues that already exist, not when I create new issues.

Hi Robin,

The steps you have described to add an issue to the sprint seem to indicate this is a defect, and should be submitted to Atlassian for help.

To see your board filter, and so determine if it is concealing the issues instead, check the following:

  • From the backlog or board view, select the ellipsis (...) at the top right of the page
  • Select Board settings
  • Select General settings on the left of the page
  • Review your Filter Query on the page to see if it could block the view

To check that, just copy the filter and try to run it using Issues and Filters to see if it returns what you expect.

Best regards,

Bill

Hi Bill,

If I follow your steps, I simply get to a query

project = EOFW ORDER BY Rank ASC

So if I run that, it just gives all availabe stories, as you would expect.

I manually tried to run the following query:

project = EOFW and sprint ="Phase 5 Sprint 5" ORDER BY Rank ASC

This query gives no results, even though as I said in the previous message I did add a story to this sprint and it does show the sprint link in the second picture of my last message.

Hi Robin,

Please try this query to confirm  any issues are in open sprints...

project = EOFW AND sprint IN openSprints()

And this one to check for future sprints

project = EOFW AND sprint IN futureSprints()

Those queries could confirm problems with the sprint field.  If those return what you expect and the board is still incorrect, I would submit a support ticket to Atlassian.

Hi Bill,

I tried the queries. They do not show what I expect.

If I move a story to either an active sprint or a future sprint, it just jumps back to the backlog. The queries you suggest also do not give me back the stories I tried to move to a sprint, even though in the issue page of the story the Agile future sprint attribute does show the correct sprint.

Hi, Robin.  At this point, you may want to contact Atlassian support.

There is one more edge case I just thought of...If your Jira instance has multiple sprints with the same name AND in different boards, the filter for one wouldn't necessarily find the other.  Again, that is unlikely, but it is worth checking by just running a query by the sprint name only, without the project name.

Best regards,

Bill

Hi Bill,

Yeah I was afraid of that as well. I will get our internal Jira guy to contact the support, as soon as he is back from his holiday ;)

I checked your last case, like you expected this indeed also did not solve it, the stories that should show up do not.

If I get a response from the Atlassian support and what comes back can be useful to other users, I will make sure to post it here.

Thanks for your time and effort Bill!
