Hello community!
How can I size bugs on jira and how to configure it ?
Currently I am using a Spint board where each ticket has story points. For bugs it is not available (because usually we dont size bugs) but I want to change that. Is it possible ?
thank you!
Hi @Irina Poghosyan,
I am just guessing you are using company managed projects (for team managed, the field to use story points is called story point estimate).
If so, story points are not available because the context of the story points custom field is limited to the story issue type (in my test instance, it is also available for epics, but I can't remember if I updated that or if this is so by default):
As a Jira administrator, you can change that. Navigate to Jira Administration > Issues > Custom fields. Locate the Story Points custom field and edit the fields context by adding the bug issue type. After doing that, you should also add the field to the screen(s) you use to create/edit/view bugs in your project(s):
Just for context: story points are at the core a concept to measure the value you deliver to your customer. In agile development, stories represent the new functionality you are putting in the hands of your customer. Bugs are not new value; they are essentially things that should not be there and that are keeping your team away from delivering new value. That's why we usually rather use time based estimates for bugs instead of story points, so we can have clear and separated reporting on how much time our teams waste on fixing broken things instead of delivering (additional) value.
Hope this helps!
Hello @Irina Poghosyan,
Thank you for reaching out on the Atlassian Community!
Just as suggested by @Walter Buggenhout, adding your Bug issue type to the custom field context of the Story Points field will provide you the ability to utilize that field within your Bugs.
More information on custom fields, including custom field context can be found here.
