Show parent, sub tasks and child issues on report

I need to show either on a report or in an exported Excel file the subtasks and child issues shown in the timelines for each project.

I need to do the above on a weekly basis. Please could you advise how to do this?

The purpose is to show the status for both subtasks and child issues.

Currently when I do export (all fields), it doesn't include the child issues. I'm happy to use a free app, but can't pay for one and need to pull this report weekly.

Please note I'm on the free Jira plan.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi @Natalie Keane , to create a JQL query that provides the results you desire we must understand the common characteristics that define the desired results. Examples:

  • return all open stories, tasks, sub tasks for a project ABC == project = ABC AND type in (story, task, sub-task) AND resolution is empty
  • return all open stories, tasks, sub tasks for a project ABC == project that include "my-label" as a label = ABC AND type in (story, task, sub-task) AND labels = my-label AND resolution is empty

so could you define the issues you wish to capture by your query?

I'm really sorry. I don't understand what you mean? I'm new to Jira and just want to be able to export parent, sub tasks and child issues in either Excel or a report. Please would you mind explaining in really simple terms? Thanks.

Hi @Natalie Keane

welcome to the community!

If you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a range of advanced features, including the ability to show your issues in their hierarchy in just one click.

This is how it looks in action:

Every JXL sheet is powered by a JQL statement or saved filter, meaning that you have full control over which issues you want to pull in. You don't really have to worry about parent/child relationships, as JXL is sorting this out for you. You can also further limit the visible issues through JXL's rich filtering capabilities.

Does this look like it could be useful to you?

Best,

Hannes

Thank you for the suggestion. I can only use the free apps though. Is this free? Is there really no way to show the child issues in excel or a report using the free version of Jira?

Hi @Natalie Keane,

JXL is free for Jira sites with up to 10 users. Since you're on the free Jira plan, I'd assume that this would be the case for you!

Best,

Hannes

Great. Yes if it's definitely free. How do I get the free version? Is it a plugin from Jira or a separate download?

Hi @Natalie Keane,

you should be able to install JXL directly from the Atlassian Marketplace: If you visit our listing here, you should see a button that says "Try it free". If you click this, it'll guide you through the next steps.

Let me know if this works,

Best,

Hannes

Thanks. But is it only temporarily free?

Hi @Natalie Keane

as long as your Jira site is for 10 users or less, JXL will be free forever. For Jira sites with more than 10 users, you can see all pricing details on our website.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Hannes

Hi @Natalie Keane

Welcome to the community !!

If you would be interested in a mktplace app, do take a look at

Issue Hierarchy

The app shows your issue hierarchy in a tree view and the same view can be exported to a CSV file. The app has multiple other features which are very useful in project tracking and management and is free for upto 10 users.

(Disclaimer: I work for RVS, the vendor for this app)

Thank you. How do I link this app to Jira? How long is it free for? Does it export the information to excel?
