Show Issues that were in an Epic but removed

Is there a JQL condition that could provide the issues that were previously in an Epic, but removed? 

Something that would provide the same results as:

"Epic Link" was in KEY-123

 I realize that 'was' is not a supported operator for Epic Link, so I know that the above query isn't feasible.

I found this article which shows how to get this information via a Listener, but want to just query this.

The link you mention pretty much tells you everything that's possible regarding JQL searches involving epic link so... no, it seems what you want to achieve shouldn't be possilbe.
