The Quick Filter displays the correct sub/tasks in Active Sprint but in Backlog it shows nothing.
Is there a workaround for this limitation?
I have tried adding all of the combinations of type into the JQL
Filter JQL: project = XXX AND status = Review ORDER BY created DESC

It's not a limitation, it is by design. Sub-tasks are a component of their parent issue, not items you would rank or size in a backlog, so Jira does not bother to display them by default, they would just be (read-only) clutter.
You can get to see them within their parents if you add the "sub tasks" field to the backlog layout settings.
thanks for the response Nic, that makes sense. I'll limit the use of that filter to the active sprint screen.

What if a team lead owns the parent task, and assigns sub-tasks to different developers?
Nevermind - looking through the forum where other people are asking the same question...I see that this would be "bloody horrible".
I see that there are only 3 lights now.
