Hi All,

I am trying to add the JIRA outlook plug-in to my email. However, when I try to use it I get the following error message. All be it, I am using office 2016 which JIRA claims to support. Do I have to upgrade to office 2019 in order to use the JIRA plug-in? Thank you in advance.

Hi @Jordan Wilkes ! Max here, one of the developers behind this add-in.

Hope you're doing well!

Lemme explain this real quick: as the prompt says, Microsoft dropped support for IE11 and so why would Atlassian support a browser that was deprecated by its creator, right?

Next, as you're on Outlook 2016 which is not that old, why do you still see that message? The reason is that Microsoft desktop apps like Outlook, Excel, etc. use a web browser to render add-ins. It's often the case the underlying browser they use is IE11.

The nuance is that what @Karim ABO HASHISH has suggested most probably won't work (a good guess though) because one's default system browser ≠ browser used by the Outlook app.

Is there any hope to make it work? Sure. There are a few things you can do:

  • update your stuff: your Office365 suite and/or (if you use Windows) update Windows. This will probably do the trick as later versions of Windows/Office will have a Chromium-based Edge browser as an add-in renderer instead of IE.
  • try downloading WebView2: this will try to enforce a so-called WebView2 (Edge) renderer in your desktop apps
  • or use your browser of choice (not IE11, obviously) and go to outlook.com to enjoy Outlook web app

Edit: one more thing is that the "Update Outlook" button has Microsoft's instructions on how to install Office updates. May be useful too.

hello @Jordan Wilkes @

It seems to be mainly a web browser issue and not outlook version issue.

I would recommend to start with changing the default browser to be Edge instead of IE (IE not supported). Atlassian products are compatible with Microsoft Edge.

1. Go to Start> Settings> System.

2. Choose Default apps and then scroll down to Web browser.

3. Tap or click the browser that is currently displayed as the default, and then select Microsoft Edge from the list of applications.

4. Restart Outlook.

Let me know how it went for you.

Cheers,

Karim
