Order cards on board by priority

Frederik Vanhaelst October 22, 2024

Hi,

on my board I have different cards, each of them linked to a priority.

I want to order the cards based on priority. I've tried a custom filter that I found on this forum:

Activating this filter doesn't do the trick..

Do you know the solution?

Hi @Frederik Vanhaelst ,

Your project is team managed, looking at your last screenshot. In team managed projects, issues are ordered by rank and can't be ordered by priority.

If your project was company managed, you could update your board filter as you tried to do. Swimlanes are also a feature of company managed boards - mocked in team managed projects by the Group By option - which unfortunately does not include priority as an option.

Before moving everything to company managed projects (which will probably be not a bad move), be aware that you cannot sort your issues by priority AND at the same time be able to manually change the order afterwards. Even in a company managed project, it is one or the other option.

Hope this helps!

Hello @Frederik Vanhaelst , to filter the board by a filter won't be possible because it breaks a board. Refering article: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/How-to-sort-the-Backlogs-in-Board-by-priority-in-2024-Jira/qaq-p/2578536

ok, they're talking about adding swimlanes instead. However, when I'm looking up how to add swim lanes it is not visible on my project, however, I'm admin..

Swimlanes can only be created in company managed projects. The project that you have is a team managed project. To mitigate, you would have to create a new company managed project and bulk move all of the issues from team managed to company managed project.

Hi @Frederik Vanhaelst,

As you can see there is no way to order the items by priority or to group them in swimlanes, especially in the context of a team-managed project.

A possible alternative would be to search for a plugin on Atlassian Marketplace that provides such capabilities.

If you are willing to try a plugin, our Great Gadgets app offers a Team Wallboard gadget that allows you to display the issues from an agile board (or filter) in an agile-style wallboard. It allows swimlanes by priority

This gadget has the advance of working with any type of project, including team-managed projects. The colors can be customized.

Hope this helps.
