Old Versions in a new workflow

I've created a new workflow that I want to implement for an existing project. That project has old Versions used on closed tickets which are no longer 'active'. Do I have to re-create the old versions for the closed tickets before I implement the new workflow? If not, how are those reconciled?

No, the change of workflow will only affect the *status* of issues. All the other fields will be untouched.
