Multiple workflows in a single project.

Osama Al-Areky November 14, 2023

Hello,

Is it possible to have multiple workflows in the same project?. Meaning having a separate workflow for each board? becuase i was trying this but whenever I try to create a separate workflow and do the transitions, it prevents me and a message pop up telling me that it is not allowed to do this action on a draft workflow. While on the other side  transitions to a status from all is allowed.

The current situation oblige me to use a signle and onyl a single workflow for all boards. What I wanted to do is to have multiple different boards with different workflows and hence with different status and transitions ( a board for marketing, a board for management, a board for finance ... etc). While they could share and have links on some status like the backlog or the done status. I don't want to view status from other boards when I do transitions for issues from a certain board; which is not the case now.

Hello @Osama Al-Areky,

You can have multiple workflows in the same project.

You associate workflow with issue type in workflow scheme and than you associate that scheme to project.

In your example you can have issue type for marketing, issue type for management, issue type for finance, etc.

And than create workflow for marketing, workflow for management, workflow for finance, etc.

Create new workflow scheme and in that scheme associate every issue type to its workflow.

When you're done, associate that workflow scheme to your project.

Let me know if this helps.

Hello, i didn't know how to in scheme associate every issue type to its workflow.

Osama Al-Areky November 15, 2023

and there is no option to assoicate a scheme with workflows. only i have an option to assosiate with issue types.

it seems that a scheme can only accept one workflow. and each project accept only one scheme and so i am not sure how can i add multiple workflows in a single schema.

Hi @Osama Al-Areky,

You need to go to Jira Settings -> Issues -> your Workflow Scheme -> Add Workflow -> Choose workflow you want to add, and when you're adding a new workflow, it asks you to assign issue type to that workflow.

When you do it, you'll have a new workflow assigned to your issue type in your workflow scheme.

Please let me know when you try to do it.

Best regards,

Hey @Osama Al-Areky ,

Workflow's are associated with Issue Types and don't have a dependency on Boards, the error that you face is due to the updating of an ACTIVE workflow, to make changes follow this guide here https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-articles/Editing-a-workflow-when-it-shows-You-cannot-perform-this/ba-p/1854392.
