Has anyone migrated a mature project from Company to Team Managed?
What was your experience and are there any pitfalls to be aware of?
Thanks!
Thanks for reaching out! Heres a bit more info:
My team has 2 squads and we are a start-up (B2B saas) within the umbrella of our parent company (B2C fmcg).
Our parent company owns the jira instance and so we are currently constrained by the company-level rules which don't support our differing needs.
Our start-up doesn't have the resources to have our own Jira instance just yet, but I was thinking about moving our Project to Team Managed to allow us to tailor our specific delivery practices.
I wanted to see if this could be a useful next step to more flexibility. It would be great to get your thoughts!
Hey @Lizzy , I think that's a great opportunity for a Team Managed project. They give you the flexibility to control your own project, set up your own workflow, set up your own custom fields, etc.
If you ever do move to "Company Managed" projects in the future, there will be a bit of friction with some of the configuration, but it's not insurmountable.
If you've got the green light from your Admin team, I would recommend giving it a shot. It should meet the needs you've shared above well, and again you have the flexibility to move to a Company Managed project in the future.
You mentioned you don't yet have the resources to start up your own Jira instance, I did want to mention that Jira does have a "Free" tier available for up to 10 users. If your users fall under that limit, and more importantly you want to have your instance separated entirely from your parent org's, this may be a good option too. You can retain the "Company Managed" projects, yet have your own control over the instance.
I would only recommend a separate instance though if you have someone who can wear the hat of "Jira Admin", as there will be a decent amount of configuration and cleanup when starting fresh.

Hi @Lizzy , welcome!
Company Managed projects are my personal favourite, due to the more simple way admins can keep them in check. Team Managed are a little more "Wild West" in terms of the amount of available customization, and the resulting configuration bloating.
Team Managed are nice for giving teams their own little spot to do with what they please, which may be a benefit to you.
Atlassian has a good support page that details some of the things to keep in mind, I would recommend giving it a review here: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/migrate-between-team-managed-and-company-managed-projects/#Things-to-keep-in-mind-if-you-migrate-from-company-managed-to-team-managed
