Link to Epics as children from an Initiative

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
I have created a new issue type called Initiative, which is one level above Epics.
It works great both in Jira and in Portfolio. I can link Epics to Initiatives in Portfolio and also directly from an Epic (see first image below).
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to add child links to Epics directly from Initiatives, similar to how you can link to Stories etc directly from an Epic?
See second image below where I can see the children, but I can't add new ones.
