Jira vs Trello for Website Development and Content Updates

Dominik February 13, 2024

Our webdev team currently uses a free version of Trello to track the progress of tasks ranging from simple content updates requested from our users, new feature development, and tracking bugs.

We also have licenses for Jira cloud and I've been wondering if there is an advantage of moving our worflow to Jira instead of Trello. With the free version of Trello we're using, it's limited in the number of views available to help individual team members quickly see what their current tasks are. Since we have Jira Cloud, this view would be available in the board.

On the other hand, receiving smaller tasks from users like "can you add this sentence to the home page" seems like it is more suited for Trello (unless someone tells me otherwise)!

Thanks for any guidance!

Hi @Dominik

Both Trello and Jira have their strengths. Ultimately the answer will depend on the needs of your team.

  • Trello is simple and easy to use. The cards on the kanban style board make sense for the smaller tasks you mentioned like "adding a sentence to the home page." In most cases, the free plan is enough for most small teams- if you don't need a lot of features. That asdie, there's no bug tracking, there's limited reporting (with the free plan) and as your team grows it may be harder to work on more complex projects.

  • Jira gives offers a good amount of features so you can match it to your team's needs. Lots of project managers use Jira to plan and track project progress including tracking bugs. You'll also get better reporting. Also, using JQL is a big plus if you want to do advanced seraches or build structured queries. Some people find Jira hard to learn though. And, you might find you'll have to pay for more advanced features.

If you decided on Jira, there are plenty of apps on the Atlassian marketplace you can use to make your experience with Jira even better.

One app I'd recommend is Visor since it syncs with your Jira data. Even if everyone on your team doesn't use Jira, you can still share accurate project updates for different audiences. For instance, if your CEO only needs to see high-level updates of a project, you can use filters and formatting to do that. If the marketing team needs taks related to updating website copy, you can create a View for them too. (Views include Gantt, Timeline, Table, Spreadsheet)

Find Visor on the Atlassian marketplace https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1226209/visor-spreadsheet-gantt-chart-for-jira-with-excel-export?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

Either way, let us know what you decide,

Michael

Thanks Michael. I'll dive into the app selection and see if I can tailor Jira to suit our needs. I also like the ability to use JQL, I hadn't thought of that!

Focusing on your word "development", I assume that your team is using a VCS, probably Git - hosted on Bitbucket, GitHub or GitLab.

If that is the case, then the integration between the source code (in Git) and the tasks (issues in Jira) makes Jira Cloud a much better candidate for this type of work.

Hi @Dominik

It's Mary from Planyway app for Trello and Jira
What views is your Trello team missing?

Transferring a team to Jira won't be easy for the team so I'd consider third-party apps first.

If you're looking for more visual transparency, you can get it with Planyway calendar, different timeline views, workload  and event time tracking
