Jira unable to recognize formatting

Jonathan Fleig March 12, 2019

I'm running into an issue where I get a message saying Jira is unable to recognize the formatting for text that I am pasting into a description.

  • The ticket was originally written in a Jira issue
  • I've tried rewriting the issue and it saves as expected
  • Copying and pasting the rewritten issue doesn't work
  • Copying and pasting portions of the rewritten issue does work

These issues are copied right around this time each month. I'm not sure why this is suddenly happening though. Any suggestions would be helpful. Having to this to several issues piece by piece will be quite time consuming.

I've had this message a few times over the last few weeks, and yesterday, found the cause/answer.

I used the chrome developer tools, and found the request to save the description.  Even though the popup error says it dosent recognise the format, it appears that the cause is that the content is too long.

Hope this helps someone.

@Jonathan Fleig If you have upgraded JIRA recently, it might be possible that the Text fields like "Description" now does not accept certain characters that were present in original text formatting.

May be this ability of "Visual Editing" can help you see those buggy characters or formatting: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jiracoreserver076/visual-editing-945112349.html

I hope it helps !

Hi Taranjeet,

Thanks I will take a look! I'm using Jira Cloud--will this work there as well?

@Jonathan Fleig I think it only works in JIRA Server.
