Hi everyone,

Please assist.

I need to install Jira Software DC, JSM DC and Confluence. How to configure such relation? Should I install each application on separate virtual machine? Or it is possible to install all applications in one virtual machine?

Please assist.

Hi and Welcome.

When setting up Jira Software Data Center (DC), Jira Service Management (JSM) DC, and Confluence, you have a couple of options regarding installation and configuration.

Option 1: Separate Virtual Machines for Jira Family / Confluence

Pros:

Isolation: Each application runs independently, reducing the risk of one application affecting the performance of another.

Scalability: You can scale each application independently based on its usage and resource requirements.

Easier Maintenance: Upgrading or maintaining one application won't impact the others.
Cons:

Resource Intensive: Requires more resources (CPU, RAM, Disk Space) since each application will have its own VM.

Management Overhead: More VMs mean more management tasks, such as monitoring and backups.

Option 2: Single Virtual Machine for Jira Family / Confluence

Pros:

Resource Efficiency:

Uses fewer resources since all applications share the same VM.

Simplified Management:

Fewer VMs to manage can simplify your infrastructure.

Cons:

Performance Bottlenecks:

If one application consumes too many resources, it can affect the performance of the others.
Complex Configuration: You may need to configure the applications carefully to avoid port conflicts and ensure they can communicate effectively.

Limited Scalability:

Scaling may be more challenging since all applications are tied to the same VM resources.

I would recommend to install Jira Family on one VM and Confluence on one VM.

I think this setup provides better performance, reliability, and scalability and you can use Jira and JSM together without systemborder. It depends on our Requirements :-)

Thank you Kai!

Could you explain how applications will communicate with each other in case of separate installation? Is there a possibility to integrate all applications?

Hi,

you can use

Application Links:

  • Jira and Confluence Integration: You can create application links between Jira and Confluence. This allows you to link Jira issues to Confluence pages, create Jira issues from Confluence, and display Jira reports in Confluence.

REST APIs:

  • Each of these applications provides REST APIs that allow for programmatic access to their functionalities. You can use these APIs to create custom integrations or automate workflows between the applications.

User Management:

  • If you are using Atlassian Crowd you can manage users across all applications centrally. This allows  consistent user management.

Shared Database:

it’s recommended to use separate databases for each application, but  you can configure them to share a common database server.
