Is it possible for the Home directory to be stored and accessed from a seperate server? (Reading the documentation I believe a share -> mapped drive would work.)
Is this advisable and if not, for what reasons?
Yes, but don't just do it, it needs some thought.
Jira doesn't actually care how you configure the storage for the home directory. As long as it has a read/write area on the host machine's filesystem it really doesn't care how it gets there. SSD, hard disk with or without RAID, nfs, SAMBA, SAN, virtual machine shared storage - utterly irrelevant as long as it's got read/write.
The caveat is that you must NOT store the index on a slower filing system. Jira absolutely needs the fastest, dirtiest, nastiest hard disk you can get your grubby paws on for the index. Most shared filing systems are far too slow and will kill your performance. Even nfs is inadequate on a Jira that's got a few thousand issues.
Bascially, that does just mean "by all means put jira home on shared storage, but move the index to a local disk"
