Q: I would like to understand how to represent and track meetings and pair-programming sessions within JIRA as this is something I would like to track as project lead to understand where their time is spent.
Since a single ticket can only be assigned to a person it doesn't correctly represent actual time spent and I am wondering about what possibilities there are for this?
Hi @John DiMaria, welcome to Atlassian community. If I understands your question correctly.
Any user with permission to log time in the project can do this on an issue. See the image below,
So you can have your team members logging time onto the issues ment to track the meeting.
Hope this helps, and that I understood your requirements correctly.

Hi @Tim Kopperud !
Interesting. Ok. So basically what you're saying is that it logs time connected to you as well as Alana, but then keeps tracking the total time spent on that individual ticket.
Is there a way to generate a custom field where one could then see that you had logged 2h 5m but Alana had logged 1h 20m?
I think the purpose / requirement from my team and for me is to understand how resources are distributed amongst the team and to be able to present this later on for management or stake holders in an easily consumable way.

Hi @John DiMaria, the time log entries are linked to the user submitting the hours. The log stays within an issue, and works independent of assignee.
You might also add sub-tasks with their own time log entries and, you can if you want, show accumulated time on the parrent issue.
Jira out of the box doesn't make it easy to report on the time log. But there are several Apps for such reporting. This free app (the lite version) might solve your needs. I have previously used it for reports similar to your requirements.

I could recommend the Activity Timeline plugin for capacity planning and time tracking in Jira.
Booking events block a person’s capacity for a specified number of hours per day. This functionality allows you to reserve or allocate an individual for a particular activity or project without the need to specify exact Jira tasks. This feature is particularly useful for planning and managing resources in scenarios where the specific tasks may not be defined yet but you need to ensure that the team member is available for the allocated time.
You can also sync Jira with Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook or iCal using ActivityTimeline. Here how it looks at ActivityTimeline:
Please let me know if you have some specific use cases or book a call with out customer success manager.

I believe with time spent you mean, the logged hours against a jira issue by different assignees. You can use Jira Rest API's to pull this data and build on your own custom solution. Or if you would be interested in a mktplace app , take a look at
Worklogs Time Tracking & Timesheets
You can easily view time entries for multiple issues day wise grouped by in a single view. The app allows to filter/Categorize/Group your worklogs data and a timesheet view too to track individual time spent. And what's more it can be easily added as a dashboard gadget.

Hi @John DiMaria ,
Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
In terms of managing and viewing the work hours of each person or task on a weekly or daily basis, I would like to suggest the Jira third-party application created by our development team at SolDevelo called “Worklogs - Time Tracking and Time Reports”.
Our app allows you to track the time spent by the members of your team on a variety of tasks. You can create Jira issues associated with a specific tasks among your team, users can track their time spend on these tasks and then you can group the reports by days, weeks, months or years and also filter them:
Worklogs is easy to use and versatile, allowing to create flexible time reports and filter them in a granular manner, making it a great choice both for Jira newcomers and long-time users.
It's worth noting that the app uses Jira's native time tracing and time logs, meaning that any time tracked previously with this method before its installation will be present in Worklogs.
I hope you'll like it! If you are interested, I will be happy to answer any questions that you might have. So, feel free to book a free demo here, or you can contact us through the portal here.
Have a great day!
Best regards,
Tomasz

Hi @John DiMariawelcome to the community!
As mentioned above, you can use native Jira's time logging and check details in the issue history.
However, it sounds like you're looking for a more robust solution with reporting capabilities. Unfortunately, Jira falls short in that area. If you're open to using third-party add-ons, I recommend checking out the Time & Cost Tracker app developed by my team.
Your team will be able to log their time just as they always have, but with the added benefit of a time widget that provides detailed information on who logged time and how much was spent on each issue. Additionally, it calculates the costs associated with tasks based on employee rates.
The Time & Cost Tracker also offers time reports to help you monitor resource allocation and team effectiveness. You can generate reports for individual users, projects, epics, or based on custom filters.
If you need to monitor project budget as well - utilize a Cost report to track labor costs, expenses and planned budget.
Hope that helps.
