Issue hierarchy: The 'Add' button in my user story does not allow for the creation of task types.

Lorraine Marsh November 6, 2024

Hi,

I am running a team managed software project.

The 'Add' button in my  user story does not allow for the creation of task types.

I've watched a few YouTube videos with no success.  Can you help?

Thanks,
Lorraine

Hello @Lorraine Marsh

What you are trying to do cannot be done.

When you look at the issue types you may notice two lines, indicated by the arrows in this image.

These are the boundaries between the issue hierarchy levels. At a given level only the issue type in the level above can be an issue's parent, and only the issue types from the level below can be added as child issues. Another representation of the hierarchy is:

Epic
|-- Bug, Story, etc.
|-- Subtask

Issues in the same level (i.e. Bug, Story) are siblings. You cannot have one of those issues be a parent/child of another issue type at the same level.

For the issue type in your video, only Subtasks can be added as child issues.

You could use the Linked Issue option to Link issues from the same level to each other. This will not be recognized as a parent/child relationship by Jira.

That will show the specified issue in the Linked Issues section of the issue view, below the Child Issues section.

Thank you.  Could I add an additional level within the system settings?  I'm sure I've had the setup I need in previous companies. :-)

Hello Lorraine,

Jira Cloud does not support adding hierarchy levels directly within Team Managed projects.

Addition of hierarchy levels for Company Managed projects is supported in the Premium and Enterprise subscriptions. That feature supports adding hierarchy levels only above the current existing levels. In those subscriptions when you add hierarchy levels you can link a Team Managed Epic to the next level up, but the issue of that level has to be created in a Company Managed project. The additional levels can't be used directly in the Team Managed project.

If you are not considering upgrading your subscription then you could look at third party apps that would give you a different way to visualize the issue relationships in an alternate hierarchical structure.
