Is there a way to create an issue that is a parent to an Epic in Jira?

Mandy Weber March 30, 2020

Is there a way to add a level to the hierarchy in JIRA above the Epic?  We'd like to independently add an Initiative issue type in JIRA without having it tied to Portfolio.   The Initiative would be the parent to the Epic, the Epic parent to the story.

Portfolio and Structure are the only two ways I know of to implement an initiative level object.

Thanks.  Does Structure support the hierarchy to exist in JIRA or only in the 'Structure' App?

Hi Mandy,

Structure uses existing Jira links (Epic, Portfolio and issue links) to visualize the hierarchy existing in Jira, but it allows you to build your custom manual hierarchy as well. BTW, you can try Structure (and Structure,Gantt) for yourself in our sandbox environment https://alm.works/gantt-demo

The heirarchy only exists in Structure technically, but it does a good job of showing you it all, and it looks seamless.

You could try the Structure app. It allows arbitrary-depth trees.
