Is it possible to log a defect against a story just like how sub-tasks can be created under a story?

Currently, a defect is an issue type, the team has to create a defect then link it to the story.

it takes extra time and the team needs to search and remember the user story.

This is a great idea! It would improve the defect-linking workflow.

AS A Jira-user who’s testing a story

I WANT to create a Defect on Issue/Story-level directly from the Story-card and have Jira link them automatically

SO THAT I don’t have to manually link the story and the defect when they are on the same level in the hierarchy

@aagrawal ,

You can create new subtask issue type called "defect subtask" and you can use this one as subtask under story.

If you already linking defect to story then there should not be issue to search story for the defect. In the linking section of defect you can see the story.

@aagrawal ,

Ok i got you but there is no way to create defect from the user story.

you need to link them separately or while creating defect you can mention the story issue in the linked issue field so it will be linked.

that is right , was looking for any workaround to create defect directly from user story.

This sounds like you want to create defects as sub-tasks on issues, but you have set up defects at the level of issues rather than sub-tasks.  You'll need to delete or rename "defect" as an issue type, and add it again at a sub-task type.

No, the requirement is not to create a Subtask.

it is to create a normal defect from the User story which will be auto-linked.

Current Process :

1. Create User story

2. Create Defect

3. Search user story

4. Link Defect with the user story

Instead :

1. Create User Story

2. some provision in User Story itself to create a defect which will automatically linked to user story.

will save lot of time while testing a user story. otherwise everytime you need to manually link.

Hope it make sense.

You need to decide how you want to do these "defects".

Either they should be raised as stories and then linked to other issues at the same level, or you should raise them as sub-tasks as they are a part of the main story.

It's one or the other - either these are sub-tasks or they are not.
