I am using the Import data function, by using the app " Jira (software project)" because I want to import tickets from a software project into a new software project.
I have selected the software project to be imported but in the next step I am only
able to import this into a new business project, the option software project is not available. Why?
@Daniel Bagiński , can you confirm that you are simply trying to create a new software project by importing using a CSV? Would you mind listing the steps, and what you are exactly seeing or experiencing?
when this post was originally posted, I was thinking that we were talking about a third-party app, but it appears that maybe we're talking about native import.
It is indeed a native import and not the marketplace app, even though @Lianne Geerlings used the phrase "the app." We are discussing YOURSITE.net/jira/settings/system/external-import.

@Olivia Medina @Daniel Bagiński @Jack Brickey
I just tried and only see the Business Project option, still missing the option Software Project.

So is the goal to move issues from one software project to another? If so why not use bulk change feature? I will have to try the import option as I have not previously done so.

For me, it's not just about moving issues from one project to another; rather, it’s about importing them, which means I’m copying them (using them as a template) from one project to another. You can do this similarly via CSV or by importing issues from Trello to Jira.

Then maybe clone and move or export to CSV and then import using CSV. Again, I am unfamiliar with importing between projects which seems illogical but let me play with the feature and chime back in later this morning.

OK so just had a look at the 'feature'. Indeed it is limited to business projects. Possibly this will change as they continue to merge JWM and JSW into Jira. The odd thing to me is we are using "external system import" to import data from an internal source (project) into another project in the same instance. I hope that we eventually see a more intuitive way of copying a project.
so for now you can consider export/import path or clone and move.

Only moving the issues is not what I´m looking for. Basically, I´m creating a set of epics with their respective tasks, the custom workflow, the schemes, and the issue types I need. The idea is to reuse the whole project as it is because the new projects share the same configuration and task needs. The only cloning possibility, in this case, seems to be to install an app because the native import feature doesn´t allow Jira Software projects, only Business Projects.

Yes, I understand completely. I have a very similar need at the moment with another client. The bottom line is that we need the ability to create a template project and copy that into another project, either in its entirety or partial, such as an epic and all children, including subtasks. However, we don't have a nice easy feature to accomplish that just yet. So I recommend export for now. Granted, this is a more manual process but it's what we have right now. With that said, you can certainly look at options available in the marketplace. If it is a one time thing, likely it is not, then you could just simply do a trial of ann app.

I have this same exact need and it is incredibly frustrating that Jira has outsourced this capability to third party apps. The export/import function is not user friendly, not intuitive and largely not complete for the exact templating needs that we are describing here.

I fully agree @Mikayla Minor on that!
Also the disadvantage with the third party apps, is that you pay for ALL your users in the organization.
While in my case it is mostly an Admin or PM in need of a functionality. In my case not more than 10 persons, but then I end up paying for 200+ users, where 190 are not even going to use it.
@Jack Brickey thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and advice! I appreciate that.

@Lianne Geerlings @Mikayla Minor Did you submit a feature request through a support ticket? If we do this, we can track and vote for it, making it visible to Atlassian.

I havent but I think that would be a great next step. I am currently working with my team to determine a work around that doesn't involve using third-party plug ins but that would be the most ideal, especially since it would mostly require them to add software projects as a possibility when using the new importer instead of just a business project. Or build the capabilities for filtering, sorting, and board manipulation into the business projects so that we can maneuver them like software projects can. I don't ultimately care either way but I think all the qualifications to certain projects or tools in Jira needs some adjustment to better meet use cases outside of software design.

Hi @Lianne Geerlings @Daniel Bagiński I´m having the same issue. Did you manage to select another Jira project type? I can only see Business Project in the dropdown.
Thanks,

It's a shame we don´t have this import feature available for software projects. I managed to import it to a business project, but it doesn´t have the structure I need for the epics and the backlog. It seems I will need to create an additional Jira Software project, move all my imported tasks to that one, and re-link the epics with my recurrent tasks.
The alternative is to use a cloning app instead. Although I always prefer to use the native features instead.

Hi @Lianne Geerlings , can you provide a link to the app you are using? I cannot find it by the nam you provided.

Hi Jack, As an Admin I am able to use the import function and see two additional apps compared to non-admins.
You go from the navigation bar and select Projects followd by "Create project"
Then you scroll down all to the bottom and choose for " Import data"
The URL stays at ...... /jira/projects hence I cannot share

Hello @Lianne Geerlings, have you resolved your issue? I also wanted to import issues from our Jira software project to another, but I am encountering the same problem.
