I have Admin rights to JIRA Project and still not able to see "Start Sprint" button

Suresh Nagappan September 22, 2023

Hi there,

I have Admin rights to my JIRA project and have admin access identified under Manage Sprint. I am able to Create & Complete Sprint but not able to see "Start Sprint" button. Due to this., my "Active sprints" is not pulling/showing the Future Sprints in the JIRA board, however I can see the future sprints in Backlog tab.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Regards

Hi @Suresh Nagappan , can you share a screenshot of your backlog? Also is there currently an active sprint?

Thanks for responding.

Please find the screen shot above, the "Backlog" tab from Scrum Board showing all the Sprints that were created, the first 2 are "Active Sprints" and the Circled one is "Future Sprints". The 2nd screen shot showing "All sprints" tab where the Sprint Filter only showing the 1st 2 "Active Sprints" but missing the circled "Future Sprint". This is a new Project and new Scrum Board, so not sure which settings need to be changed. The final screenshot showing that "Manage Sprints" under Permission tab in Settings clearly showing that Admin role has access and I am an Admin to this Project.

My ask is why is my Sprint ("CFSSOCMN Sprint2") not showing in the Sprint Filter?

How can I make my Sprint ("CFSSOCMN Sprint2") Active, so it shows up in the Filter?

Regards,

Hi @Suresh Nagappan ,

From the Backlog, if you click on the ellipses to the right of the inactive sprint what are your options?

Are you sure that you are in the administrators role? Keep in mind that there are different types of administrators. Who started the other two sprints? Can you check with them to understand if they are able to start the third sprint and if so, assess the differences in permissions between the two of you.

The  below screen shot showing "Sprint Start" button active for another project. I need this "Sprint Start" button to be active for this new Project. If someone can help me how to enable this, I should be all set.

I am Admin to this new Project, may be the person who created this Project and made me an "Admin to this Project" have universal Admin access to entire JIRA at the Organizational level. I don't think that should be an Issue, since I have access to Create, Edit & Delete Sprints, I only not have access to "Start Sprint" as it is missing.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm not immediately seeing the problem here obviously. As an example here's what I see when running parallel sprints as it administrator. As you can see, I have three active sprints, and in the backlog I have one inactive sprint that presents the start sprint button. It might require you reaching out to Atlassian support. It appears that you are on the premium platform which should result in a quick turnaround. If you do reach out to them, please update this post with the final results.

For me its not about parallel sprints, I do not see "Start Sprint" in my new project from the time that I created the project and the new Sprint Ids. The Sprint Ids that is already showing was created from an old Project and it is showing up in my new Project but my idea is to create new Sprint Ids in the new Project to have different Sprint duration.

Oh… hmmm

Based on images you have two active sprints. Can you confirm? Can you complete them if the exist. Is the old project active?

It feels like something has gone sideways here. I don’t understand how sprints from one project is showing in new project. I’m missing some important data here that I cannot access.

Suresh Nagappan September 27, 2023

I have Completed the first Sprint shown in the image, still the new Sprint is not showing in the Sprint filter. However if I Start the Old Sprint Id sequence, I am able to see those in the New Project Sprint Filter. Only the new Sprint Ids that I created under new Project is not showing as the Start Sprint button is missing in the new Project.

Are you using sprint naming format from old project? That may be culprit. Can you try different naming?

Suresh Nagappan September 27, 2023

Does the naming convention matters? if Yes I can try that but since the old Sprint Ids are also showing up in the new Project, sometime, this could cause confusion if we adopt to the same naming convention to differentiate between the old and new, with a little tweak.

i am unsure what the issue is here, but confused by why you show multiple active sprints (CSC S09 and S08) on a project if in fact they do not belong to that project.

Hi @Suresh Nagappan - I'm confused as well! Can you provide a screenshot of the General section in your board configuration if possible please? I'm curious about the board filter and whether it is trying to pull in tickets from projects where you don't actually have Manage Sprints permission. I recall problems like this in Jira Server sometimes caused issues  with the sprint buttons being disabled sometimes - I'm wondering if you've got a similar kind of problem on Jira Cloud.
