How to update issues (set new custom field value) via External System Import in JIRA cloud

Marty Brown October 23, 2024

I'm unable to map the Key (or Issue Key) field during the import, so instead of updating my new custom field for an existing issue, I get a brand new issue.  Key field is not available as a choice to map to from my input file, but it is a column present in my CSV file.

Has anyone solved this before? I have a large number of items that I need to update, and the information is already in a spreadsheet, so I want to take advantage of that.

Hi @Marty Brown

Welcome to the community!

Ensure that you are uploading the CSV from the System admin.

  1. Choose > System.

  2. Switch to the old experience
  3. In the Import and Export section, click External System Import and then click CSV.

    1. If you see the new import experience, select switch to the old experience to go to the CSV file import wizard.

  4. Choose your CSV source file.

  5. Leave the Use an existing configuration file option unchecked if you do not have a configuration file or if you want to create a new one. Configuration files specify a mapping between column names in your CSV file's header row and fields in your Jira site. At the end of the CSV import process, Jira will create a configuration file that you can use for subsequent CSV imports.

  6. Expand the Advanced section to change the file encoding (UTF-8 by default) and CSV delimiter. If your CSV file uses a separator character other than a comma, specify that character in the CSV Delimiter field.

  7. Click Next.

Here the KEY mapping should appear.

Best regards

Sam

Hi @Samuel Gatica (ServiceRocket) - thanks so much for your reply.  I don't see the option you listed from Settings, so I'm guessing maybe I don't have permission at the system level, only at the project level.  Does that sound right to you?

Hi @Marty Brown

You must have Jira administrator permission, if you don't have this you will have to ask your IT admin to grant you the role or help uploading the CSV
