Hi @Renuka Mogal -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

There are many community questions (and solutions) for this scenario, and there is even a built-in template in project automation rules.  Please search for those to see examples.

The variation for your rule is the Epic and child stories are in different Jira projects.  And so the rule will need to have multiple-project or global scope.  Please discuss this with your Jira Site Admin as they will need to build the rule in the global configuration area.

Please note well: because this rule spans projects, it could trigger more frequently as a result. Ensure only the desired projects are impacted and that this rule does not exceed your monthly usage for the Jira site.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Just to be clear, are you saying that our JIRA Admin would need to create/write/maintain the Automation at the Administrator level, or would changing the Admin setting to Global Scope then allow me to write the automations as I do now, but be able to include multiple projects?

Thank you for your assistance!

Hi @christopher_branaman

Sorry for the delay in responding as I have been offline for a few weeks.

Rules which have multiple-project or global scope are managed for the entire site in global settings...and so a Jira Site Admin (or Org Admin) needs to manage them.

The reasons are likely due to potential impact of such rule scopes as licensing is less of a concern since the rule packaging changes for usage.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hello @Renuka Mogal ,

our "Smart Fields for Jira" app may be able to help you. This makes it possible to display aggregated data from other tasks at task level.

Example:

Hi Frank ,

Thanks for your reply ,Im looking for an automation script where it will pull sum of story points at epic level irrespective of which project the stories are . Is its as a child of that Epic it should roll up the story points .

Can you pls help with automation here .

Hi @Renuka Mogal ,

please take a look at the following community post:

Automation for JIRA - Sum of numeric (decimal) fields doesn't work with lookupissues

It looks to me as if this is a similar approach.

Hi @Frank Leclerc _Decadis AG_ does your Smart Fields for JIRA app have the ability to calculate story points for an Epic across multiple Projects?

e.g. your screenshot above shows a sum of cards in an epic and all cards are in the ADR project.

If I have an epic that includes cards from the ADR proejct AND cards from the RDA project (as an example), can your app provide a summary of all of those cards?

Hey @christopher_branaman,

I hope you don't mind me stepping in on this: yes, the result would include all issues linked to the Epic, regardless of their projects.

Cheers,
Thorsten

I will not ask why Epics and Stories are in different projects ...
Also i am assuming you are not trying to add up stories from different scrum teams...

But in short i would say there are different ways that come to my mind...

  1. The SCRUM Board in JIRA would roll up totals for every sprint.
  2. Same SCRUM Board would also allow you to filter on EPIC Cross Sprints.
(I know, should not happen, but it does )
  3. Also if you use the Advanced Roadmaps Plugin, and the Parent /Child relations are
set correctly, you can see this in a hierarchical structure.
AND Roadmaps allows you to switch on/off roll up of values/dates etc...

I do not know your organisation setup, but i really like to use Advanced Roadmaps and a higher Level tool, as a SCRUM Board gives you the inside view... Roadmaps gives you Outside view.

I also use Roadmaps for fast and visual PI Planning and even Portfolio Roadmaps across multi Product teams...

Hope this helps.

Thanks , But we cannot use other tools .

Basically want to get the total by creating an automation script where it will pull sum of story points at epic level irrespective of which project the stories are . Is its as a child of that Epic it should roll up the story points .

Can you pls help with automation here .
