How to see new issue type in timeline view ?

Antoine Martin July 13, 2023

Hello,

I have created a Kanban enterprise managed project and added a new Issue type called "Initiative". I want this issue type to appear in the timeline but cannot find a way for it to appear. I have read here that It needs to be the parent issue type but cannot find a way to do it.

When I create an Epic it shows on the timeline but as soon as I change the issue type to "Initiative", it disappears from the timeline.

Thank you for your help.

Hello @Antoine Martin

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

The default issue hierarchy for Jira is:

Epics

-- standard level issue types (i.e. Story, Task, Bug, etc.)

---- subtask level issue types

When you create additional issue types you create them at either the second or third level.

Using the Advanced Roadmaps functionality available in the Premium subscription it is possible to extend the issue hierarchy upwards. While the "Initiative" issue type is created at the second level you can use the Issue Type Hierarchy configuration screen to indicate that it is the next level above Epic.

To view that extended hierarchy you have to use the Advanced Roadmaps Plans functionality. The Timeline functionality is not capable of displaying the extended hierarchy.

For more information about Advanced Roadmaps refer to

Thank you. This is unfortunate, but I will live with that. This should be better explained in the documentation for people not to become crazy trying to find what setting(s) to change.

One expects the change of the default issue type and the definition of the issue type hierarchy to be  taken into account by the timeline view.

Actually, any issue with a start date and a due date should appear in the timeline view.

The item you referenced in the documentation:

The default parent issue type in Jira Software is Epic, which is what we use in this documentation. However, this is a dynamic value based on how your administrator configures the parent issue type. For example, if your project uses feature as the parent issue type, you’ll see Create Feature.

I thought that this referred to the option that allows us to change the name of the built-in Epic issue type from "Epic" to something else like "Feature" or "Initiative". However when I change the name of the Epic issue type that doesn't change the text of the Create option I see in the Timeline. I have not previously noticed a feature for "changing the parent issue type" otherwise.

I tried adding a new issue type into the Issue Type Hierarchy at the same level as Epic.

Changing an existing Epic to that new issue type did result in the issue disappearing from the Epic level in timeline, like you saw.

I'm going to do some more research.

Hi again,

You are experiencing what I am experiencing, except from the fact that the issue type I created stands above the Epic.

I thought that the phrase about the parent issue type referred to the "default issue type" of the issue type system:

Then I thought that by making my new issue type above in  the hierarchy, it would work:

What you say is that even at the same level, it doesn't work. We agree on the fact that this phrase in the documentation is misleading somehow.

The ability to add issue types above Epic in the Issue Type Hierarchy screen is applicable only to the Advanced Roadmaps functionality. Those additional levels will display only in AR Plans.

The Timeline view is a more basic feature intended to work only with the default hierarchy levels.
