How to order / rank statuses in a team managed project?

We have a team-managed project with customized statuses. 

When I review the List view and sort by Status, the sorting seems random. How do I manage this? 

For company managed projects, statuses are ordered via Settings > Issues > Statuses. I'm looking for the equivalent of that in a team-managed project.

Have you tried add status sort in JQL?

project = "project name" ORDER BY status ASC

That's exactly what I'm doing. However, after doing Order ASC or DESC, the ordering seems random and does not follow the workflow.
