In our Active Sprint board we have 3 columns associated with the status field - To Do, In Progress and Done.
As we mark sub-tasks as DONE, they automatically move to the DONE column in the Active Sprint board. However, the story remains in the To Do column, even after we mark the Story status to DONE.
Is there a way to have the Story move to the DONE column as well?

Hi Nancy
Attached is a screenshot from my JIRA instance, if the JWT plugin is not installed you don't have the option to transition a ticket:
Don't forget please to accept my answer if you were satisfied with the help I provided.

Thank you Fadoua for the information. I am passing this on to our administrator and recommending we get the plugin. I am accepting your answer, for not only did you answer my original question, but gave me additional information I didn't know to ask for. Thank you once again!

Hi Nancy,
Based on the screenshot that you have attached, the Agile Active Board has swimlanes configuration set based on 'Story'.
I would suggest to change the swimlanes configuration to 'No Swimlanes' that will give you the desired visual column 'Done' movement at Story level.
Give it a try and let us know if that helps

This answer solved the issue for me, it also makes sense. I have now set my swimlanes to Epic so all work is grouped under Epics on the board, which suits my use case. Otherwise set swimlanes to none as suggested in Pramod's answer.

Hi Nancy,
Do you mean after all subtasks are done the parent ticket remain in the To Do Status?
Do you ever move the Story to In-Progress? Did you make any changes at the workflow level? Can you please hide any confidential information and send us a screenshot from the board columns screen?

Thank you for your quick reply. I thought I had responded to your reply, but it appears it did not get submitted.
Yes I do mean after all subtasks are done the parent ticket remains in the To Do Status column. Our process is
- We create a story, and a group of sub-tasks within that story.
- As we begin to work on any of the sub-tasks, we change the status of the story to In Progress, and update the status of each sub-task as we address them.
- As we complete a sub-task we change the status of the sub-task to DONE, and it automatically is moved to the DONE column on our Active Sprint board.
- When all the sub-tasks are completed, and marked Done (and automatically are moved to the DONE column), we manually change the status of the story to DONE as well.
However, the story remains in the To Do column, which is very misleading.
I will attach a screenshot (next reply) as I suspect when I did this last time, it may have been the reason my response did not get submitted

In the screenshot below (which is taken from my Sandbox project - a test project that I can use to try out different things) please note that story SP-20 is marked Done and is in the To Do column, and all 3 sub-tasks for this story: SP-43, SP-44, SP-45 are marked Done and are in the DONE column.

@Nancy Wfirst of all, thank you for all the provided details there is a way to mark the parent ticket to done automatically once the last subtask is set to done. Let me just make sure it can be done without the use of a plugin.
Also from your screenshot I don't see any ticket under To-Do. I apologize for my question I am just making sure. I annotated on the screenshot the one I am thinking you are referring to. Please confirm:

Yes - that is exactly what I am referring to. The story looks like it is in the To Do column. Shouldn't it shift to the right under DONE?
Thank you for your quick reply (again)

@Nancy Wthat really doesn't mean that your parent issue is in DONE. What you have on your board is a "natural" jira behavior. Your parent issue displaying as crossed really means that it is done. Let me know please if you are still confused.
I will get back to you on how to have the parent issue closed once the last subtask is done. I know it is done through a workflow post-function

Thank you again. I understand the strike through means it is done. I was hoping that the story would move to the Done column as well. Jira is new to my team, and the developers are finding this confusing, but I can explain it to them so that they understand.
I look forward to hearing how to have the parent issue closed, once the last subtask is done. Thanks.

My apologize I am a French speaking Person. Yes I meant the Strike through.
Also keep in mind when you explain it to your team that the parent issue was never inside a column on the board that's why it makes sense that it doesn't move through the board.
Yes I promise to get back to you about the post-function :)

No worries - i understood you completely. You have been very helpful.
Also mentioning that the parent issues was never inside a column, does help to make sense.

Hi Nancy,
I didn't forget about you. Do you have JIRA Workflow Toolbox plugin in JIRA?

Thanks Fadoua, I need to check with our administrator to see if we have that plugin. I hope to have a response later today.
Thanks again for your attention to this.

Ok I will try later today my personal instance where I know for sure I don't have that plugin and see if there is a post-function to help with closing the parent ticket once the last subtask is closed.
I promise to get back to you.

Hello, I'm also very curious as to how to solve this without the plug-in. I have several teams that are asking me "Why is the parent story persisting in the ToDo column even though it is Done and struck through?". :)
