I've created a project using Software Development > Scrum template which comes with standard issue types (Epic, Story, Bug, Task, Sub-Task). When navigating to the project > Project Settings > Issue Types I can see all of them in 3 groups (Epic is first group, Bug/Story/Task in second, Subtask in third). Subtask is also configured as Subtask issue type.

I wanted to add another subtask issue type, let's name it Special Subtask type, so I followed the procedure outlined in this article https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/configure-sub-tasks/

Now I don't know how to link it parent issue type. I would like to make this subtask issue type available to Story issue type, but when I click on "Add a child issue" button on Story in my project, Subtask is automatically created (where as I would like the option of creating Special Subtask).

I am just starting to explore JIRA Cloud options. Thank you for any help in advance.

Hello @Lorraine

Welcome to the community.

Just for confirmation, are you working a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? It will say at the bottom of the navigation pane on the left.

The instructions you used were for adding a sub-task issue type for use by Company Managed projects.

Assuming that you are working with a Company Managed project, there are additional steps to actually make that new type of issue available to your project. The steps that you followed only created a new issue type. They did not make it available to any projects.

Notice the additional links to other instructional pages on the page you referenced? You have to complete those steps also.

On the off chance that you are actually working with a Team Managed project, the process for adding an issue type is entirely different, and you need to refer to:

Welcome to the community!

You do not need to "link" anything here.

If you can create issues in a project, and the project has sub-tasks, then you can use "create subtask" in an issue to create them.  If you've got more than one sub-task type in the project, it will ask you which one you want to create.

Note that "child" issues only apply to Epics, and they are story-level issues, not sub-tasks.

What if I don't want the option to choose which sub-task and want that fixed?

Eg.

Issue Type X > only has sub-task type X available

Issue Type Y > only has sub-task type Y available

Thanks,

Ryan

@Ryan Willms

With the Jira native functionality you can't restrict the tye of sub-task available to only certain issue types in a project. All types of subtasks that are part of the Issue Type Scheme for that project will be available to be created under all nin-subtask issue types in the project.

Thanks, Trudy. That's what I thought.
