How to get the "set resolution" checkbox

Ben Blomerley November 28, 2019

Hi there, and apologies if this question betrays my lack of knowledge of Jira!

We run different software projects for customers. On one project I can see a 'set resolution' checkbox, which means I can properly do burndown charts based on our workflow, because some items can be 'done' by the engineering team, but not necessarily resolved.

On another project (started by someone else) I can't set that resolution separately, and therefore anything classed as done is automatically resolved:

I've been through loads of the documentation and community posts but can't find anything that quite fixes it.

I am loath to delete the workflow and start again, as we're mid-project and that might cause a whole different set of issues.

It's a classic Jira board, not nex-gen.

Help please!

As above, you will only see the "Set Resolution" checkbox on a Simplified Workflow.  A simplified workflow is one that isn't shared across projects, and allows transition from any to any state.

If you aren't using a Simplified Workflow, there are two options to force Resolution to be set:

  • Associate a screen with the workflow transition to Done/Closed etc.  The screen should present the "Resolution" field to the user.  You can use the Resolve Issue Screen which is built-in to Jira I believe.  The field can also be set to mandatory using a workflow validator.
  • Set the resolution automatically using a workflow Post-Function  This  will only allow you to set it to a single value obviously.

Hello,

I think your first screenshot shows a simplified workflow, the second isn't a simplified workflow, that's why you have not the set resolution checkbox in the second screenshot.

The second workflow may have a postfunction that set automatically the resolution when the issue is "closed"
