How to display all linked child issues of an epic in Top level planning?

Shiny Rajadurai February 1, 2024

I have created a business company managed project with various epics that would relate to a mile stone. Multiple teams tasks contribute towards this mile stone and although I have linked the child issues to the epic. I am not able to view it as a drop down from the epic. I have tried to do this from the project view or as a top level plan and either way I cannot do this, Is there a way to display this as a Work breakdown structure?

Hi @Shiny Rajadurai and welcome to the Community!

If it is true that you created a business project, then you are right: the timeline in your project only shows the hierarchy above the task level - it only shows tasks and sub-tasks hierarchically.

If you had set up a software project instead, the hierarchy would display tasks below epics. This seems to go back to epics being essentially a Jira Software feature.

If you have Jira Software premium, the plans menu lets you create advanced roadmaps where you can unlock much more advanced features as well.

Hope this helps!

Thank you that helped. I have changed my projects to software projects and this helped me plan it with roadmaps

Hi @Shiny Rajadurai

It's Mary from Planyway for Jira

In JIRA, creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to visually represent the hierarchy of epics, stories, tasks, and sub-tasks can be challenging because JIRA's default interface primarily focuses on issue tracking and agile project management, without native support for displaying issues in a traditional WBS format. However, there are several approaches and tools you can use to approximate a WBS within JIRA or with the help of external plugins. Here's how you can attempt to display your project structure more hierarchically:

1. JIRA Advanced Roadmaps (Portfolio)

If you're using JIRA Cloud, Advanced Roadmaps (formerly Portfolio) is an excellent tool for planning and visualizing work across multiple projects and teams in a hierarchical view. It allows you to create plans that include epics, stories, tasks, and sub-tasks, providing a visual representation similar to a WBS.

  • Creating a Plan: You can create a plan in Advanced Roadmaps and include the relevant epics and their linked issues. Advanced Roadmaps allows you to organize issues under epics and even across projects, offering a high-level overview of progress towards milestones.

  • Hierarchy Configuration: Advanced Roadmaps lets you configure issue hierarchy beyond the default levels, which can be particularly useful for representing a WBS. You can access this through the Advanced Roadmaps settings.

2. JIRA Issue Hierarchy

  • Epic Link: Ensure each task or story is linked to an epic using the "Epic Link" field. This establishes a hierarchical relationship, but viewing it directly as a drop-down under the epic in the project view is not the default behavior.

  • Quick Filters: In the board view, you can use quick filters to show only issues related to a specific epic. While this isn't a hierarchical drop-down, it helps in focusing on tasks under a specific epic.

3. External Plugins

Several JIRA plugins available in the Atlassian Marketplace can help visualize your project structure more effectively:

  • Planyway for Jira: This addon lets you versatile types of the timeline view that you can group in different perspectives: users, projects, epics.  It supports subtask visualization too.Feature image
  • Structure for Jira: This plugin allows you to create hierarchical lists of issues, offering a flexible way to view and manage your project's work breakdown structure. It supports nesting issues in a tree-like structure, which can be customized to match your WBS needs.

  • BigPicture or BigGantt: These plugins are designed for project management and offer Gantt chart capabilities, allowing you to visualize the project timeline and dependencies. They also support hierarchical views of tasks and sub-tasks, akin to a WBS.

4. Manual Workarounds

  • Confluence Integration: If you're looking for a simple, static way to represent a WBS, you could manually create a hierarchy in Confluence (if your organization uses it) and link JIRA issues within that structure. This approach is less dynamic but can be useful for reporting purposes.

Thank You that really helps. I managed to do this using Jira advanced Roadmaps for now. I will look at Planaway if it is required

Hi Shiny. How did you accomplish this with 'Jira Advanced Roadmaps'?
