How to calculate epic progress by story point estimate

Gretchen Swecker April 19, 2020

The percent complete calculation for a Jira epic appears to use issue count rather than story point size. Is there a way to calculate based on story point size?

As an example:

If an epic has 3 stories of size 0.5 points, 3 points, and 5 points. The first story (0.5 point) is complete and the two other stories (3 and 5 points) are incomplete.

The epic percent complete calculation says the epic is 33% complete (1 story/3 total stories) but I want it to calculate percent complete to be 5.8% (0.5/8.5).

Is there a way to do this in Jira or is a scripting app (like ScriptRunner) needed? If a scripting app is required, which would you recommend?

Good but not based on story points but number of issues (story) in the epic

Rather than calculating number of issues you can sum the story points as well

Hello @Gretchen Swecker

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Indeed, it is not possible to change the issue count percentage of child issues in the Epic view to display some different estimation, like Story points or Time tracking.

That being said, the Epic panel of Scrum boards displays a percentage bar based on whatever estimation you select for your board. These would be the steps to properly configure it:

  1. Create a new Scrum board and add the Epics and related issues to it
  2. Navigate to the Scrum board you created and click in the three dots menu (...)
  3. Select Board settings > Estimations and select "Story points"

Once you do the steps above, the percentage bar in your Epic panel at the scrum board will display based in the Story points of its child issues, displaying it's exact estimation when hovering the mouse over it:

Thanks for your quick reply. I see that the % complete on the Epic panel is based on story points. The problem is that this is not a prominent location for this statistic. When viewing the epic, the % complete by issue count is more prominent and leads to confusion about true progress based on effort remaining. Could a feature request/bug fix be submitted to display the % complete on the epic page calculated by effort rather than issue count?

Hello @Gretchen Swecker

Thank you for your detailed answer.

Indeed, we see a real improvement by implementing the feature you are asking for. That being said, I created the following feature request so our PMs can consider it:

Display the "Issues in Epic" progress bar based in estimation instead of status in the Epic view
