How to Shift Incomplete Work and Future Sprint Items in JIRA - SCRUM Board

Toya G_ November 26, 2024

I’m using the Scrum board in JIRA, and in my backlog, I already have several sprints planned out—for example, Sprint 2, Sprint 3, Sprint 5, and so on, all the way up to Sprint 10, with associated dates to help with forecasting.

Let’s say we underperformed in the current sprint, and I want to move everything we didn’t complete to the next sprint. At the same time, I want all the items in the subsequent sprints to shift forward accordingly.

I’m wondering if there’s an easy way to shift all the cards in JIRA to accommodate this.

Hey Toya,

Greetings from Atlassian! Thank you for reaching out on Atlassian Community.

When we complete a sprint in Jira that contains incomplete issues, we get an option to move those issues other sprints. Below is a screenshot from my site upon completing a sprint with incomplete issues:

Similarly, we can do so at the completion of every sprint.

NOTE: Jira considers issues only in the right most column as Completed irrespective of the status. So try to have all the statuses that you consider as completed in the rightmost column.

Thank you,

Aditya

Hi Aditya,

Thanks for your response. That’s really interesting—I don’t seem to have that option. I’ve provided a screenshot below showing what is available to me once I complete a sprint.

Thank you for your reply @Toya G_ ,

I can advise a few things:

1. If you are in a Company Managed project, make sure you have the 'Manage Sprint' and 'Schedule Issues' permissions. (Project Settings > Permissions > Permission Helper)

2. If you are in a Team Managed project, make sure you have 'Administrator' role in the project. (Project Settings > Access)

Here is how it should look ideally:

Sprint.png

where

  • "Test Sprint 2' is an already created sprint(but not started)
  • "New Sprint" will create a new Sprint for you and place the incomplete issues there, and
  • "Backlog" will move incomplete issues to the backlog.

Hope this helps.

Thank you,

Aditya

Got it. Yes, I’m able to do that. Using your example, I can add tickets to "Test Sprint 2" that hasn’t been started, add them to a new sprint, or move those incomplete tickets to the backlog.

What I’m looking for is an easy way to shift everything in the future sprints to the next sprint. For instance, if I create a new sprint or add all the incompleted tickets to “Test Sprint 2,” I’d like everything that was in Test Sprint 2 to move to Test Sprint 3, and everything in Test Sprint 3 to move to Test Sprint 4, and so on.

This might be worth considering as a future enhancement. Thanks for your help!
